FIT-FOR-DUTY EXAMS – Dr Robin Kroll

A Fit-for-Duty Exam (FFDE) is a specialized evaluation conducted by a qualified psychiatrist to assess whether a First Responder is able to continue performing their official duties in a safe and effective manner. Sometimes, employers become concerned about the extent to which their employees are psychologically fit to perform the duties of their job. Those employers may seek an expert opinion about the extent to which an employee’s psychological functioning is sufficiently  adequate.

FFDEs are generally ordered as a response to documented poor performance, excessive use of sick leave, suspected mental illness or conduct that violates policy.  These exams are necessary for the safety and welfare of the community and department personnel, and to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws that require First Responders to be free from any physical, emotional, or mental conditions that might adversely affect their ability to carry out their duties.

A Fitness for Duty Evaluation is not a mode of discipline and is not a standard psychological evaluation: instead, it focuses on occupational functionality.  A written referral from an agency is required which details the reasons for the referral. In order to understand the first responder’s pattern of conduct or behavior, documents requested may include performance evaluations, internal affairs investigations, use of force incidents, public complains, disciplinary actions, testimonials, etc.

Exam results are provided in an unbiased professional manner utilizing standardized assessment practices.
